The Artists of the Remount: Images of the horse during the First World War 1914-1918

This exhibition features artists, past and present, who have celebrated and commemorated the contribution of the horse during the conflict of the First World War. Many of these artists were servicemen or professional artists who specialised in equestrian subjects in peacetime.  The Sladmore Gallery is delighted to loan ‘The Remounts ‘ by Gilbert Bayes, a model which dates from 1916 and depicts an intimate wartime scene of a soldier with two horses. This bronze takes its name from the ‘Remount Department’ which was set up in 1887 to order to ensure the uniformity, suitability and training of the animals purchased for the forces. By the outbreak of the First World War there were four Remount Squadrons, with depots in Woolwich, Dublin, Arborfield in Berkshire and here in Melton Mowbray.

Guest curated by Dr. Robert Fountain, this exhibition is supported by the Leicestershire Museums, and includes works on loan from private collections, artists and national museum collections.
