Thursday 14 October, until 8pm
Sladmore Gallery is delighted to take part in the autumn edition of the West End Gallery HOP! on Thursday 14 October.
Over 50 galleries across Mayfair, St James’s, Soho, Fitzrovia, and Marylebone will open until 8pm for visitors to ‘hop’ from gallery to gallery during the evening.
Galleries will be welcoming visitors outside of their regular opening hours, and there will be a series of self-guided and guided tours to encourage visitors to see as many galleries and as much art as possible.
On show at our Jermyn Street gallery will be our current exhibition Sculpture – Truth to Materials
All artists have to understand the medium which translates their vision into a piece the viewer can connect with on a visceral level. However, this is always pivotal when it comes to the creation of three-dimensional art. A sculptor must understand not only the positive space, but also the negative space; the volume and the void; the light and the shadow; created on their surface but in the world beyond their work. They must also understand what is possible – how thinly each material can support the weight of their creation.
The works in this exhibition – led by Nic Fiddian Green’s Still Water in different metals and stones – speak to the skill of the sculptor and our own connection to the earth from which all of the pieces owe their origin.
Sculpture is more divine, and more like Nature, That fashions all her works in high relief, And that is Sculpture. This vast ball, the Earth, Was moulded out of clay, and baked in fire; Men, women, and all animals that breathe Are statues, and not paintings.
After 30 years thinking primarily towards bronze, recently I have been working in other materials. Fundamentality, I love working with materials sourced from the earth.
