September 23rd 2017 to March 4th 2018.
The exhibition ‘Life Force – Animals in Pictures’ gives an overview of Hetty Heyster’s work from 1972 to the present day. Heyster is a Dutch sculptor who specialises in the depiction of animals. The genre of Animalier art emerged in the nineteenth century and one of its forerunners was the French sculptor Antoine Louis Barye. The study of nature formed the basis for animal art, with the zoo as a field of study. Hetty Heyster frequents the Artis Zoo in Amsterdam and the Antwerp Zoo to observe animals at close quarters.
In addition to the work of Hetty Heyster the exhibition will include further pieces by her teacher Arie Teeuwisse, and well-known artists Karel Trompeneers, Jaap Cheese, Ewald Mataré, Antoine Louis Barye and Rembrandt Bugatti.
Further works have been loaned by the Antwerp Zoo, Museum Kurhaus Kleve, The Sladmore Gallery, London and various private lenders.
